Only 20 km away from the castle, lies this small sanctuary completely dug into the rocks of Mount Tancia. 

 

Originally a Pagan temple dedicated to the Goddess Vacuna, divine protector of the forests and waters of the Sabina, legend has it that in the IV century the area was destroyed by a dragon who found refuge in the cavern. 

Pope Sylvester, who one night was praying on Mount Soratte, witnessed the descent of two angels who fought against the beast with lighting.

The next day he travelled to the location followed by a large crowd and inspected the cavern, now free.

It was immediately sanctified in honour of Saint Michael, the dragon slayer. 

 

 To reach the cavern, you will follow a tortous yet enchanting path that cuts through the forest, venturing deep into the mountain and allowing you to take in all the breathtaking sights and naturalistic fauna that only the land of Sabina can offer.
